Developed material
E. Min, A.E. Shumack, M.T. Westra and L. Heimel, Kernfusie, lesson material on nuclear fusion for the new high school science subject “Natuur, Leven en Technologie”.
M.T. Westra, Energie, Motor van jouw wereld, introductory booklet on the world of energy, on its impact on environment and health, and on future energy sources (FOM-Rijnhuizen 2008, ISBN 9789085712107).
Activities at Rijnhuizen
Student Open House Day, October 9th, 2008
General Open House Day, October 19th, 2008
The Fusion Road Show was presented 6 times at Rijnhuizen for visiting students and other groups, including two performances during the General Open House Day. During that day, dr. A. Rijs gave two performances of Is laserlicht altijd gevaarlijk?, a lecture aimed at primary school students.
Rijnhuizen organised 6 guided tours of the institute for visiting groups and dignitaries.
On November 14th, a delegation of the Socialistische Partij visited Rijnhuizen to gather information on Fusion research.
On November 24th, the chairman of the Ukraine federation of cities for sustainable energy visited Rijnhuizen.
In 2008, 14 secondary school students and 9 university students visited Rijnhuizen individually to conduct interviews on fusion research.
Via the website www.fusie-energie.nl, which welcomes some 300 visitors a day, Rijnhuizen received about 50 requests for information, most of which from secondary school students writing a paper (‘profielwerkstuk’) on fusion.
Two groups of secondary school students participated in measurements on Pilot-PSI as part of a physics class on nuclear fusion.
Rijnhuizen hosted a workshop on theatrical techniques for presenting science to the general public. The workshop was organized by Euro Physics Fun (EPF), a network of European physics shows.
External Presentations
The Fusion Road Show was presented around 40 times outside of Rijnhuizen, including a performance at the UN General Assembly during the UN-UNIS students conference in New York; a performance at the Physics@Veldhoven conference in January, with the current US-Secretary of Energy, Steve Chu, attending; a non-stop version of the show at the Rijnhuizen stand of the ESOF-conference in Barcelona; and a Fusion Road Show-performance during the celebration of 200 years of KNAW, the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences. A total of about 4000 students were reached in this way.
Other presentations directed at a more or less general public or at secondary school students are mentioned below:
A.W. Kleyn, De zon op aarde, nieuwe energie voor Curaçao?, Invited lecture at the Universiteit Nederlandse Antillen, Willemstad, Curaçao.
A.W. Kleyn, De zon op aarde, Lecture for the Utrecht students association Unitas at the ‘Nacht van de Ratio.
N.J. Lopes Cardozo, ITER, a physics experiment on the road to fusion power, Presentation for the Dutch United Nations Students Association (SIB), Utrecht.
N.J. Lopes Cardozo, ITER, a physics experiment on the road to fusion power, TU/e Honours Class, Eindhoven.
N.J. Lopes Cardozo, Fusion Energy, Presentation for ABN-AMRO private bankers.
N.J. Lopes Cardozo, Fusion Research Challenges, Presentation at the Energy Symposium, Amsterdam.
N.J. Lopes Cardozo, Fusion Energy, Presentation for a delegation of the Socialistische Partij, Rijnhuizen.
N.J. Lopes Cardozo, The energy issue: can we line up technology, politics and economics?, Presentation at the Van der Waals Energy Symposium, Eindhoven.
G. de Vries and E. Min, Kernfusie, voors en tegens in debat, Workshop at the Van der Waals Energy Symposium, Eindhoven.
E. Min, Vragen over kernfusie, “Expert op Afstand”-video conferencing session with a primary school.
E. Min, Kernfusie in de klas, Workshop on the new NLT teaching module on nuclear fusion, Woudschoten conference on didactic methods in physics, Noordwijkerhout
External Publications and Interviews
Around nine articles about nuclear fusionappeared in the largest Dutch newspapers. The majority of articles featured Rijnhuizen as the Dutch centre for fusion research, following news about the international ITER-project, or were instigated by press releases about the ITER-NL economic mission to France. At least eighteen more articles were published in newspapers and in science and technology magazines.
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) annually publishes a book about their research for the general public. The 2008 edition, “Experiment NL” (NWO 2008, ISBN: 9789089270122) contains two topics from Rijnhuizen:
* Het gelukkige huwelijk van wetenschap en bedrijf (p. 52), about research by prof. F. Bijkerk
* In volle vaart naar een megacrisis (p.168), interview about the energy crisis with prof. N.J. Lopes Cardozo.
In februari, the daily television news programma “RTL Nieuws” interviewed prof. N.J. Lopes Cardozo and featured footage of the Pilot-PSI experiment.
