Annual report 2007 and Visitors Guide online

The report contains an overview of events of the last year, a discussion of the most important scientific results and a "visitors guide", i.e. a chapter that describes the scope of all scientific and supporting groups in the institute. Moreover, data on funding and scientific output are collected in the appendix.

 

An important highlight was the fact that Felice, the extension to the FELIX laser, was successfully commissioned this year. With this unique research facility, significantly higher infrared intensities can be produced than before. This allows low-absorption gas-phase experiments.

 

The major progress made on the Magnum-PSI experiment for plasma surface interaction was recognized by a review of the project by Euratom. The construction of the experiment is well underway and it is expected to be completed on schedule. For the Magnum-PSI experiment the hall which houses it was renovated, including a reconstruction of the façade of the building and the garden.

 

Also in 2007, the ITER organization was put on firm ground. The European contributing organization to ITER, Fusion for Energy (F4E) has been officially created. Prof. Niek Lopes Cardozo was appointed vice-chair of the F4E council, while dr. Adelbert Goede joined the F4E executive committee. In the Netherlands, the organization ITER-NL was finalized by the signing of the ITER-NL agreement by the partners FOM, TNO and NRG in the presence of the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Mrs Maria van der Hoeven.

 

Scientifically, Rijnhuizen has been doing very well in 2007. This can be measured from the 7 PhD thesis (one of which recently got an Award from the EPS) and 87 journal papers, 18 of which in high-impact journals
