Energy - powering your world
30 September 2008
Where does energy come from, how does our use of energy impact our environment and how will we meet our energy needs in the future? In the recent Dutch translation of his book Energy, powering your world, public information officer Mark Tiele Westra of the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen explores the world of energy research and development. The richly illustrated and very accessible book is a great introduction tot the world of energy for secundary-school students and anyone who is interested in the engine of our civilization.
From the last chapter

"All large-scale energy production systems have their problems and their merits. Fossil fuels emit greenhouse gasses and other pollutants, new hydro dams change the environment and have social costs. Nuclear fission power plants are emission-free but produce waste. Using fossil fuels often makes countries very dependent on other countries. The best solution seems a diversified energy system, using all possible energy sources, so the risks and negative impacts of all sources can be limited.
"Research in renewable energy sources, safe and clean ways of using fission power, and new sources like fusion energy are all needed to guarantee our energy many years away. The future of energy starts today."
