The largest telescopes in the world provide spectacular images of a variety of astronomical phenomena. The sensitivity and resolution of these observations can only be achieved by means of very sophisticated scientific instruments behind these telescopes. Such instruments cannot be purchased "off the shelf". The NOVA-ASTRON Optical infrared instrumentation group is one of the prominent groups globally, developing these instruments. This colloquium presentation provides an overview of the astronomical instrumentation activities in The Netherlands.
