DIFFER
DIFFER EVENT

Matchmaking event: secure your position in the supply chain of future fusion reactors and beyond

The call for Long Term Programmes (LTP) is part of the NWO programming for the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) for the purpose of the Dutch government’s mission-driven innovation policy. The 10-year running time of the LTP provides the opportunity to roll out a strategic research programme on fusion energy. This will allow Dutch industry to capitalize on the world leading position of academia and industry on topics like feedback control and systems engineering in the field of fusion energy and magnet design. For more information on the KIC call for Long Term Programmes please consult the NWO website at https://www.nwo.nl/en/calls/kic-long-term-programmes-2024.

Strategic proposal
This is the right time for such a strategic proposal, as recent breakthroughs in the field of high temperature superconductors and recent records on fusion energy production in both magnetic confinement and laser fusion have brought commercial fusion in reach. A myriad of new fusion start-ups and semi-private initiatives arose in the past 5 years that are building (Commonwealth Fusion Systems) or designing and testing (Proxima fusion, Tokamak Energy, UKIFS, Renaissance fusion and Gauss Fusion) new types of compact energy producing nuclear fusion devices.

Work packages
Our plan is to set up the LTP and to expand the successful DIFFER-UKAEA-UKIFS collaboration on the development of fusion power plant exhaust control. We have provisionally identified the following possible work packages: Systems Engineering and multi-physics engineering, Plasma Control, Fuel Cycle, Full Device Modelling and digital twinning, Machine learning in the loop, high temperature Superconductors (including their remote handling), and the role of fusion power plants in a sustainable energy ecosystem.

During the matchmaking event we would like to explore these and other possible work packages where Dutch academia and industry can take a leading role and form these into a coherent project proposal.

By the end of the matchmaking event we expect to have identified a coherent set of work packages that will generate the knowledge, and build the expertise to provide the participating institutes and industries with a world leading position in the supply chain of future fusion reactors and beyond.

Date & location
The matchmaking event will take place on Monday 23 June from 13:00 to 17:00 at DIFFER in Eindhoven.
