The FOM Foundation has reached agreement with Bogor Projectontwikkeling B.V. and Green Real Estate B.V. about the sale of the Rijnhuizen estate in Nieuwegein. The transfer of the estate will take place in 2016. Up until the start of May 2015 the FOM Institute for Fundamental Energy Research DIFFER was located on the estate.

The estate with the laboratory buildings, associated constructions, and the monumental Rijnhuizen castle with two coach houses, a teahouse, and a garden shed covers an area of about 71,916 m2. The laboratory buildings on the estate will be demolished to make space for homes, including luxury apartments and houses. The monumental castle with its associated buildings will remain intact and their use will be determined at a later date. Ans de Wijn Bedrijfshuisvesting B.V. advised FOM during the sale of the estate.

DIFFER is the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research. Researchers from DIFFER are doing research into nuclear fusion as a clean, sustainable and safe source of energy and they are also investigating solar fuels - efficient storage and transport of sustainable energy in the form of chemical fuels. The decision was taken to relocate DIFFER to the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology to provide space for the new research and to improve the embedding of the research in an academic setting. The relocation of DIFFER has almost been completed.
