Launch of Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems - EIRES

Published on September 07, 2020

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has launched a new institute during the Opening of the Academic Year 2020/2021: the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems - EIRES. During an online talk show, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven has pushed the button to officially open the new institute. EIRES, with Richard van de Sanden as scientific director and Mark Boneschanscher as managing director, is the third TU/e institute next to ICMS and EAISI. DIFFER is a strategic partner, especially due to the strong synergies with its Solar Fuels research theme.

The Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES) is TU/e’s answer to the broad, multidisciplinary question that is the energy transition. EIRES facilitates the collaborative development and swift deployment of new technologies and devices by bringing together TU/e researchers working on materials, systems, and processes for energy storage and conversion. The approach is based around societal impact: working on fundamental challenges underlying the development of systems with the potential for rapid upscaling and market penetration. That is why EIRES promote academic research driven by societal challenges, with close partnerships between academia and the high-tech manufacturing industry in the region.

In addition, EIRES aims to take a strong place in the national debate, by stimulating the development of thought leadership in EIRES researchers through regular discussions and community-building activities. This includes the continuation of the activities started in the Strategic Area Energy, but also e.g. the involvement of EIRES researchers in setting up regional and national strategies for the energy transition. Connect to EIRES and stay tuned on interesting posts and future events: www.tue.nl/eires.

Richard van de Sanden will also remain involved at DIFFER as scientific group leader of the Plasma Solar Fuels Devices (PSFD) group.
