In this paper the plasma engineering aspects involved in the reliable and safe operation of present-day tokamaks are described. This paper covers the plasma breakdown, plasma control of steady state, the avoidance and control of MHD instabilities, and the criteria imposed on safe plasma scenarios. The underlying empirical and theoretical knowledge of plasma engineering is briefly treated along with the application of this knowledge.
