Paulien Herder is professor in Engineering systems design in energy & industry and department head of the Chemical Engineering department at Delft University of Technology. She currently co-leads the e-Refinery institute at TU Delft, which is a university-wide institute into electrochemical conversion and storage, involving the faculties of Applied Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Technology, Policy & Management.
"In this talk the complexity and interconnectedness of the energy and industry transition is analysed using a couple of different perspectives. I will first take an international perspective and show how wind energy expansion on the North Sea is not just a technical problem. Then I zoom in to the Dutch landscape and further illustrate the complexity by bringing in ethical considerations. Finally, I will discuss the contributions of the e-Refinery institute to the Dutch national RELEASE research program, in which we take a similar comprehensive approach for developing large scale energy storage solutions."
