Abstract: What is the universe made of, and how does it work at its most fundamental level? At Nikhef, the Dutch national institute for subatomic physics, scientists tackle these questions by combining developments in theory, experiment, and advanced technology. This talk presents the key research projects, from probing particle interactions at the smallest scales with experiments at CERN, to exploring the largest scales in the universe with observatories deep in the sea or under a mountain. Nikhef’s work not only deepens our understanding of nature but also helps shape the future of research infrastructures in Europe and beyond, such as the Einstein Telescope.
