DIFFER Seminar: Rapidly attributing extreme weather events to climate change: progress and challenges

Abstract: Our climate is warming, and along with it, extreme weather events that can cause large human and economic loss, are on the increase. The rapidly developing field of extreme event attribution seeks to investigate, better understand and communicate the connection between recent extreme weather events and climate change, combining knowledge from weather observations and climate models, on a time scale relevant for decision making.

This seminar will introduce the concepts of extreme weather event attribution, the state of the art of the field and some of the challenges involved using examples from the World Weather Attribution initiative and related projects.
