Consortium launched for carbon-neutral hydrogen production

Published on September 20, 2024

The HyPRO consortium, arising from the GroenvermogenNL programme, will receive a grant of 34,511,995 euro. With contributions from industry added, 50,197,611 euro will allow the consortium to research more sustainable production of hydrogen.

Hydrogen is seen as the energy carrier of a more sustainable future. This requires a lot of green hydrogen, which is produced from the electrolysis of water with green electricity. The challenge here is to reduce costs and scale up production. This consortium is tackling these issues by developing and improving electrolysis technology. They will also work on developing a Dutch supply chain for materials, components and systems.

About the consortium
The consortium HyPRO: Towards flexible, durable, and high-performance Hydrogen Production Technology, was formed during two intensive workshops in which all parties had to jointly arrive at a single proposal. HyPRO is a collaboration of ten universities, five universities of applied sciences (UAS), two research institutes and more than 40 companies. It is also remarkable that companies from the UK, Italy, Denmark, France and Germany are contributing to this consortium.

DIFFER and the HyPRO consortium
Also DIFFER takes part in the HyPRO consortium. Mihalis Tsampas, senior scientist and group leader Catalytic and Electrochemical Processes for Energy Applications at DIFFER: "The role of DIFFER in this project will be in material discovery, synthesis and the evaluation for low and high temperature water electrolysis (via experimental and theoretical studies) for hydrogen production. In addition DIFFER will work on plasma pyrolysis characterization for hydrogen production from methane."

About the National Growth Fund Programme GroenvermogenNL
The National Growth Fund Programme GroenvermogenNL is the green capability investment programme for the Dutch economy and society. Through this programme, green hydrogen should be the pulling force for the transition from a fossil-based society and industry to sustainable energy supply. This will enable the Netherlands to build a new industry and an attractive business climate. To make this transition possible, well-trained people and a strong structure of knowledge sharing are necessary. The investment programme runs until 2028.

National Growth Fund programmes
NWO runs thematic programmes for research, knowledge development and innovation funded by the National Growth Fund. The results are used in innovations and organisations, thus contributing to the sustainable earning capacity and broad welfare of the Netherlands. The programmes bring together parties from the entire knowledge chain, both public and private.
