Dutch research institute DIFFER and European fusion company Gauss Fusion are going to collaborate intensively. With a new Centre of Excellence in the Netherlands, the two parties aim to accelerate the realization of fusion energy. And make great steps forward in the fields of remote handling (in foreseen collaboration with partners in Denmark), control and life cycle management.
The collaboration with Gauss Fusion offers opportunities for the manufacturing industry and the knowledge institutes. Gauss Fusion is stepping up to industrialize and scale fusion energy and make it a reality in Europe. In doing so, Gauss Fusion combines entrepreneurial and technological know-how with the excellence of the leading research institutes in Europe. Gauss Fusion works with partners from science, industry, and the public-sector all-over Europe.
Having the Netherlands as another agile European partner with an innovative approach on board brings Europe another step closer to the industrialisation of fusion energy. As a first step the parties intend to cooperate in the area of remote handling (robotic maintenance) that is crucial for the successful realisation of any big project, in this case it‘s the construction of a fusion power plant.
Acceleration
The targeted research DIFFER will carry out will directly lead to design improvements, which is needed to accelerate fusion energy. Marco de Baar, director at DIFFER: "I think it is great to see that commercial fusion parties are developing quickly and that they know how to find us. People’s effort
To carry out this work extra manpower will probably be needed temporarily, which leads to opportunities for PhDs, postdocs and other university graduates. From DIFFER, the research group in systems and control engineering will be involved. Gauss Fusion has over 20 employees and is currently growing.

DIFFER en Gauss Fusion starten Centre of Excellence voor fusie-energie: 'Europa is succesvol als landen zich verenigen'
DIFFER gaat intensief samenwerken met de Europese kernfusie-onderneming Gauss Fusion. Met een nieuw Centre of Excellence in Nederland willen de twee partijen de realisatie van fusie-energie versnellen. En grote stappen maken op het gebied van remote handling (in samenwerking met partners in Denemarken), control en life cycle management.
De samenwerking met Gauss Fusion biedt kansen voor de maakindustrie en voor kennisinstituten. Gauss Fusion zet grote stappen om fusie-energie te industrialiseren, op te schalen en werkelijkheid te laten worden in Europa. De organisatie combineert daarbij ondernemerschap en technologische kennis met de topkwaliteit die toonaangevende onderzoeksinstituten in Europa hebben. Gauss Fusion werkt samen met partners uit de wetenschap, de industrie en de publieke sector in heel Europa.
Met Nederland als wendbare, innovatieve Europese partner aan boord komt Europa een stap dichter bij de industrialisatie van fusie-energie. De partijen gaan in eerste instantie samenwerken op het gebied van remote handling, wat cruciaal is voor de succesvolle realisatie van elk groot project, ook voor de bouw van een kernfusiecentrale.
Versnelling
Het fundamentele onderzoek dat DIFFER uitvoert leidt direct tot ontwerpverbeteringen die nodig zijn om fusie-energie te versnellen. Marco de Baar, directeur bij DIFFER: “Ik vind het fantastisch om te merken dat commerciële fusiepartijen tot ontwikkeling komen en dat ze ons weten te vinden. Dat vind ik een brevet van vermogen en een bevestiging van onze positie in dit veld.”
Uitblinken
Gauss Fusion werkte eerder al samen met de TU/e. Milena Roveda, CEO van Gauss Fusion, is verheugd over het vooruitzicht om nu ook met DIFFER samen te werken: "Het verleden heeft laten zien dat Europa succesvol is als landen zich verenigen en als wetenschappelijke instituten en industrieën samenwerken aan ambitieuze projecten. De huidige energie- en klimaatsituatie geeft Europa een unieke kans om opnieuw uit te blinken. Fusie-energie heeft de sleutel in handen. Gauss Fusion streeft naar een sterke Europese fusie-industrie van wereldklasse, die niet alleen Europa, maar ook de Verenigde Staten en Azië kan bedienen. Menskracht
Om dit werk uit te voeren zal waarschijnlijk tijdelijk extra menskracht nodig zijn, wat kansen biedt voor PhD's, postdocs en andere universitair afgestudeerden. Vanuit DIFFER zullen de onderzoeksgroepen op het gebied van systeem- en regeltechniek betrokken zijn. Gauss Fusion heeft meer dan 20 medewerkers en groeit momenteel.
