DIFFER stops using X

Published on October 31, 2024

DIFFER no longer uses X (formerly Twitter) as a communication channel. As of the end of this month the Dutch research institute terminated the account on X. More and more universities and research institutes are leaving the platform.

For some time, DIFFER has seen dwindling engagement, declining relevance, and a progressively limited reach on X, making the time and energy spent on the platform no longer worthwhile.

Developments

The decision to quit X, follows a few months after SURF, the ICT cooperative of Dutch education and research institutions, also has left the platform. DIFFER underscores the statement SURF made: “We believe it is important for researchers and academics to be able to express themselves freely on the platform. Due to recent developments on X, such as the lack of moderation and the increase in discriminatory content, more and more researchers and academics have left.”
