Steering Committee for external use of Magnum-PSI

Published on May 23, 2019

During the Plasma Facing Components Conference PFMC2019, DIFFER has installed a Steering Committee for its research facility Magnum-PSI. Greg De Temmerman (ITER Organization), Dmitry Terentyev (SCK-CEN) and Jan Coenen (Forschungszentrum Jülich) will advise DIFFER on how to further strengthen the facility's research program for external users.

Extreme plasma surface interactions

Magnum-PSI is the only laboratory facility in the world capable of exposing materials to the extreme plasma conditions at the edge of future fusion power plants. Research on Magnum-PSI includes work on projects granted in national open science competition and research performed for EUROfusion and ITER. DIFFER also reserves a third of the facility's experimental time for open, bottom-up research on topics both within and outside fusion energy.

To advise on promising research directions for the Magnum-PSI open program, external experts Greg De Temmerman (ITER Organization), Dmitry Terentyev (SCK-CEN) and Jan Coenen (Forschungszentrum Jülich) will form a new Steering Committee. Together, they will assess the selected elements of the previous year’s program and their scientific and technological relevance and impact, identify possible gaps in the research program and suggest or assess possible extensions of the DIFFER PSI facilities.
