DIFFER strategy: more facilities and open to third parties

Published on July 11, 2023

DIFFER is going to invest in new facilities for energy research and open these up to third parties more than ever. This is stated in the Strategy 2023 – 2028 which the institute presents today. Furthermore, DIFFER aims to strengthen its ties with universities, universities of applied sciences, other research institutes and society. The research focus remains on materials, processes and systems in the fields of fusion energy and solar fuels.

Two years ago, the institute began the process that would culminate in the new strategy. To begin with, external experts and institute staff evaluated the science case. That led to a wish list of facilities, a search for finances and a puzzle concerning the way it would be embedded in the organization.

"We are strengthening our mission and expanding our research infrastructure," says Marco de Baar, director of DIFFER. He is pleased that the strategy is set for the next five years. "We are opening up our facilities to more external users. In addition, we are engaging in new collaborations and partnerships. This gives energy for the future."
