The ability to detect single molecules has long relied on fluorescence approaches due to their high signal-to-background ratio. This limits the applicability of the approach to fluorescently labelled molecules with a high quantum yield.

Time-resolved cathodoluminescence nanoscopy

Cathodoluminescence imaging spectroscopy (CL) is a powerful tool to characterize optical nanomaterials at deep-subwavelength spatial resolution. In CL, a 5-30 keV electron beam is raster-scanned over the surface while the emitted radiation is detected.
