Research- and Support Technician

DIFFER is the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, one of the nine research institutes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The institute focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to energy research, combining physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science. DIFFER's research takes place in two main themes: Solar Fuels for the conversion and storage of renewable energy and Fusion Energy as a clean and unlimited source of energy. DIFFER develops and supports a national network on fundamental energy research and collaborates closely with the academic community and industrial partners.

Research- and Support Technician

At DIFFER we perform fundamental research on renewable energy. Are you interested in supporting our research team and extend the technical support capacity within our Solar Fuels Facilities and Instrumentation group? We are seeking a support / research technician who will assist the scientists on a daily basis in our laboratories in which we perform research across the borders of physics, chemistry and material science.

Responsibilities and tasks: 

Your primary responsibility will be the hands-on support inside the labs. These supporting tasks may vary from e.g. (i) the (pre-)design and assembly of custom-tailored constructions and extensions to existing equipment or working on new setups, (ii) the preparation of the relevant infrastructure (gas lines, process cooling, measurement and control systems etc.), up to (iii) the pre-selection, purchase and maintenance of lab equipment as well as re-stocking consumables. You will be the daily contact person for scientific staff and users of a research lab which is dedicated to gas conversion. As such you will be working in close contact with our in-house supporting departments (i.e. design office, mechanical workshop, electronics department). Additionally, you are taking care of some of our shared equipment thereby keeping track of maintenance and calibration certificates. Finally, as research technician you play an important role regarding risk- and safety policies that are in place at DIFFER.


We seek enthusiastic candidates that are willing to work in an international and interdisciplinary team of scientists (physicists, chemists) and engineers. The applicant should be able to operate at HBO level.

A relevant degree in Electrical Engineering, Process Engineering, Applied Sciences or related fields will be appreciated. We may also consider different relevant qualifications (e.g. MTS) . Prior experience and affinity with e.g. electronics, electrical safety, vacuum systems, installations for process gases, cooling systems and other research-lab related topics are highly welcome.

Employment conditions: 

Our institute offers a first class and international research environment with various interdisciplinary but related research topics and projects. You will be employed by the NWO institute Foundation for a fixed period of two years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 3,089 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
