9th International Symposium on Liquid metal Applications in fusion devices

Dear colleagues,

We are glad to invite you to participate in the 9th International Symposium on Liquid Metal Applications for Fusion (ISLA-9). This will take place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands from September 14th to September 18th 2026.

Liquid metals are promising materials to be used in a fusion reactor. As a self-healing and neutron-resilient material they offer a compelling alternative to solid plasma facing materials. Solutions ranging from static capillary porous structures to vapour-box divertors and fast flowing walls, are all being explored. Lithium has been demonstrated to lead to strongly improved confinement times through wall conditioning. And liquid metal blankets offer the possibility of continuous replacement of the breeder material, improved thermal transfer, lower costs and simplified blanket structures. Research and development about liquid metal applications in the fusion community has therefore grown rapidly over the last few decades.

The purpose of International Symposium on Liquid Metals Applications for Fusion (ISLA) is to bring together scientists and engineers actively engaged in research on liquid metal applications for fusion devices so that recent progress and issues can be discussed in an open forum for the eventual development of attractive fusion reactors. The first edition of the conference was held at NIFS, Japan in 2009, and has been held biannually since then. This 9th edition is hosted by the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER) in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. We look forward to welcoming you!
